Flag for Albania – Symbolism, History, and Meaning
The Albanian flag is one of the most distinct national symbols in the world. With its striking red background and black double-headed eagle, it captures the essence of Albania’s rich history, national pride, and cultural significance. Let’s explore the flag’s origins, symbolism, and key facts.
Albanian Flag History - From the Byzantine Empire to Today
The Albanian flag has a long and fascinating history, beginning with the Byzantine Empire. The black double-headed eagle first became prominent under the Paleologian dynasty, symbolizing power and authority. In the 15th century, Skanderbeg adopted the flag during his fight for independence against the Ottoman Empire. This version of the Albanian flag became a powerful symbol of freedom.
Skanderbeg’s Flag (1443-1479)
During Skanderbeg’s revolt, the Kastrioti family’s coat of arms – featuring the black double-headed eagle on a red background – became synonymous with Albanian resistance. Skanderbeg’s successful defiance of the Ottoman Empire is one of the most important moments in Albania’s history, and his flag remains a symbol of national pride today.

Albanian Ottoman Empire Flag – 1478 – 1912
The League of Lezhë (1444)
The League of Lezhë, the first unified Albanian state, also used this flag. For the first time in history, Albania was united under a single leader and flag. This historic flag design set the foundation for Albania’s future flags, solidifying the eagle as the symbol of the nation.
Rebellions and the League of Prizren (1878)
Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the double-headed eagle was a rallying point for Albanians fighting for independence from the Ottoman Empire. It was also the flag of the League of Prizren, a movement dedicated to uniting Albanians into a single cultural and linguistic nation.
Flag of Independent Albania (1912-1914)
On November 28, 1912, Albania declared its independence, and the Albanian flag was raised by Ismail Qemali in Vlora. The flag, with the black eagle on a red field, became the symbol of a new, independent Albania. Various alternate designs, like the one raised by Dedë Gjon Luli during the 1911 revolt, also featured the same eagle symbol.
Flag of the Principality of Albania (1914-1920) and Albanian Kingdom (1928-1939)
In the Principality of Albania, the flag retained the black eagle but saw changes in design depending on political circumstances. Under King Zog, Albania was declared a monarchy in 1928, and a crown was added to the eagle.
Albania Under Italian and German Occupation (1939-1944)
During the Italian occupation (1939-1943) and later the German occupation (1943-1944), Albania was a puppet state, and the flag was modified to align with its occupiers’ symbols.
Communist Albania (1946-1992)
Following World War II, Albania became a communist state, and a golden star was added to the flag to represent Marxist-Leninist ideals. This design remained until the fall of communism.
Modern Albanian Flag (1992-Present)
After the collapse of communism in 1992, the original design with the black double-headed eagle on a red background was restored. Today, the Albanian flag continues to be a symbol of Albania’s sovereignty, unity, and independence.

Albanian Flag Symbolism of the Colors
The Albanian flag meaning is deeply rooted in its red background and black double-headed eagle. The red represents the bravery and sacrifices of the Albanian people, while the black eagle is a symbol of sovereignty and national strength. The eagle, used by ancient Byzantine empires, signifies Albania’s resilience through centuries of foreign rule, from the Ottoman Empire to modern times.
Cultural Significance of the Albanian Flag
The Albanian flag is more than just a national symbol; it’s a cultural icon that represents the unity and pride of Albanians worldwide. From vintage Albanian flags seen in historical re-enactments to contemporary designs on clothing and accessories, the flag connects Albanians to their roots. It’s proudly displayed at cultural events, weddings, and national holidays like Independence Day, symbolizing not only freedom but also the enduring spirit of Albania’s past and future.
Evolution of the Albanian Flag Over Time
The Albanian flag has undergone several changes throughout history. During the Communist era, a golden star was added above the eagle, symbolizing Albania’s alliance with other socialist states. However, this star was removed in 1992 after the fall of the communist regime, restoring the flag to its original design
Albania country flag in Modern Times
Today, the Albanian flag is flown proudly across the country and represents unity among Albanians both domestically and in the diaspora. It remains a symbol of freedom, heroism, and the country’s ongoing journey towards prosperity
Fun Facts About the Albanian Flag
- The double-headed eagle on the Albanian flag is a unique feature that it shares with only a few other nations, including Montenegro and Serbia, all of which have historical connections to the Byzantine Empire.
- Skanderbeg is often depicted holding the flag in national monuments, reinforcing his legacy as the “Athleta Christi” (Champion of Christ)(
